DuHadway Alumni Update: Abbie Richardson — Class of 2015
The last two years of undergraduate studies at Alma College have been a whirlwind of amazing opportunities and challenges for Abbie Richardson. Abbie received certification as a Vinyasa Yoga Instructor, which was then used to craft her Honors Thesis research on Somatics, Yoga & Dance. This research provided her with very unique insights into the field of movement-based somatics and the connections to the artistic world of dance.
In April of 2019, Abbie competed with the Alma College College Dance Team at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) in the Divison III categories, Jazz and Team Dance. Upon advancing to the finals for both dances, Alma College took 5th place in Jazz, and won the National Championship Title for Team Dance for the first time in Alma College history as just a third year team. “It was one of the most unbelievable experiences that I know my teammates and I will never forget,” Abbie stated.
Two weeks later Abbie graduated from Alma College first in her class, Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts and Honors in Dance. In order to finish her travel requirements at Alma College, Abbie spent two weeks dancing in New York City. While there, Abbie spent four days in residency at Gibney Dance Center, had the opportunity to watch five performances by the New York City Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, and the David Parsons Dance Company, and then explored the different artistic and cultural outlets that the city has to offer!
Since graduation, Abbie has accepted a position as the Director of Dance at Mid American Studio & Pom in Farmington Hills, MI. As the new Director, Abbie will have the opportunity to create and develop their first ever Competitive Company. Abbie said, “I know that my knowledge and experiences with DDD Elite will guide me in this new endeavour.”
Abbie has been busy this July, as she had the privilege of attending the Bill Evans Somatics & Dance Conference at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. There, she had the pleasure of taking classes and attending lectures with some brilliant dancers and movers from across the country. Abbie was also invited to present her senior thesis research at this conference!
If you would like to see Abbie perform, she has recently taken a position dancing for Third Coast Dance Company of Alma. She will be performing in their upcoming show, Making Waves, this August. “I am so excited about all of the new opportunities dance has brought to my life, and I know that it will continue to inspire me long into my future.”
