It was a wonderful weekend at NYCDA at the Lansing Center!
The convention began with Friday night sessions with Twyla Tharp modern classes with a Tharp company member – Kelly. Dancers were then up early Saturday morning starting with a quick team meeting at 7:40 a.m. before breaking into levels to take classes until 2:30 p.m. Classes resumed Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. followed by the Convention Finale from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
At the finale, Marissa Bloomquist and Lakyn Zimmerman were awarded tap scholarships from Maud Arnold allowing them to attend a free regional next season. Maggie Galan was awarded the Future Star Scholarship by the staff in the teen room, which also allows her to attend a free regional next season.
This year DDD had two Outstanding Dancer Scholarship FINALISTS. On Sunday, auditions were held at each level (mini, junior, teen and senior). From a field of hundreds, junior level dancer Lauren Gilbert and mini level dancer Lizzy Nevins were chosen by the NYCDA staff as strong candidates!
Lauren Gilbert was also awarded the Triple Threat Dancer Scholarship, which gives her the option of attending a workshop in New York City.
In regards to this weekend’s convention Miss Jillian said, “I was proud of the dancers’ continued commitment to their classes and attitude towards this amazing opportunity to learn and grow as dancers and teammates.”
And finally, a very important and impressive award which fully reflects EVERYTHING DDD hopes to instill in their dancers was the Backstage Good Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations dancers on bringing this one home as a team!
